A Week of R&R
Well it was the Thurs before the long weekend and we haven’t been camping or doing much of anything. Since my wife and I had the same weekend off I came up with the brilliant idea of camping in Temagami for the long weekend.
So Fri afternoon we headed to Finlayson Provincial Park. We got to pick a good site and the park was not too full but the campsites mostly had fisherman. We got camp set up and opened a few wobbly pops to start the weekend.

After a few suggestions where to fish I headed off to the Access road and launched from there. I made my way down to the Southern Arm of lake Temagami in search of Lakers. I got down around some island and started marking. Put the rigger down and cruised around for awhile. No takers. I found it hard as the depths changed consistently. I was mostly on a recon mission for a later trip. Back to the PP and a bit of a swim with the family. That afternoon we headed down to a few shoals in search of Walleye. Fished for a while but nothing . My son finally caught a small Bass. Headed back before dark and managed to see a spots with a few boats. “I’ll be back”.
The next morning was Sun and we were off for an adventure. Headed north of Temagami to Net Lake. A small deep lake I spent may a summers on my Aunts Island. I had never been back on the lake for over 30 years and really wanted to see the old cabin. We put on the water and headed over to the island.

We had a brief look from the water. New cottage built on the point but some things were still the same after 30+ years. Made our way up the lake to another island we used to have sleep overs on. Most of the families were fairly close back then. There were some people on the dock so I stopped to talk and see who owned my Aunts Island (long sold) Turns out these people were still the original owners of this other island and all grown up now. Now in their 60’s They remembered the summers my brothers and I had spent on both islands. I toured the camp and some things were unchanged. It was amazing. We parted with a warm fuzzy feeling inside from the rekindled relationship. We hit a back bay and my son caught a 3-4 lb Pike. Quite excited he was. From there off to a beach I remembered. While coming into the beach we passed beside a 5 lb Walleye,

After a bit of a swim we headed back to my Aunt’s Island so I could poke my face up to the window and have a look. Here’s a pic of my son infront of it. I was a bit younger than him when I spent time there.

That night I headed down lake Temagami to the shoal I had seen boats the night before. It was 8 pm and not a sole around. I got a few small bass. Then it stared to get dark and the boats started arriving. Most were trolling but I stayed jigging. I got to nice size Walleye but in the slot size.
On Mon we headed home and the drive wasn’t half bad.
Tues I got up and hit Simcoe for some Lakers. Marked tons but on takers. I went back out that night and picked up about a 4 lb laker off the riggers.
Wed I took off and got a bunch of running around down.
Thurs after dinner I headed back out on Simcoe. Picked this Laker up heading back in. I had just released my line from the ball and put the rod down while I brought the ball up. This guy didn’t fight till he got about 15’ from the surface. Now I tell you this can be quite the job. Driving the boat with a drift sock. Setting the line in the trigger and lowering the ball all while trying to keep the boat straight.

All in all it’s been a good week and time to go back to work. You an really see the seasons change up north. The leaves are starting to change, the geese are flocking and the night temps are dropping. Man I love these Ontario seasons.

wow RR, great story!! alwsys nice to take a trip down memory lane and revisit your boyhood, especially when you can do it with your son and compare. Too bad the fishing up in Temagi didnt go better, I've always heard its a great fishing lake. But at least you could come up and rustle up a laker or two here. Still worth the trip up north I am sure! Thanks for sharing!
regards, Mike.
