Walleye Fishing on the Detroit River
« on: April 06, 2010, 12:02:12 PM »
Spent a few days down in Windsor over Easter. We couldn't launch Saturday due to high winds and Sunday was a day with my Mother.
Sooooo since I couldn't get out on the boat, I went down to the River early Sunday morning (beautiful day unlike Sat) and the boats and boys were out. A few people were fishing dockside and catchin Perch.
Here are a couple of Pics: (The boats were fishing in a great spot for Walleye, about 1000 metres E of the Bridge - nice drop area and noted for Big Fish)

If your thinking of Fishing for Walleye in the River - here is a link to a very good list of known spots on the Detrior River. (The Fella above is standing almost in line with Canadian Buoy 104) also Mud Island has produced some fantastic fish and is my favorite.

***From what I've been told, fish boated Sunday ranged 4 to 5lbs.

If your interested in exactly where this hole (in the Pic below) is located before you launch - take a drive East along Riverside Drive, Windsor and find Askin Blvd. The hole is straight ahead looking at the Detriot River. Stay to the left of the pier as it meanders East.

Hi Dokdok,
Your most welcome. Should be good for another couple weeks. If your fishin off the walkway you need a 6' net - 1 was caught just West of where the Pics were taken - small but close to 4lbs, I would guess. Best part was it was in broad daylight.....lol - go figure - I guess anytime is good!
The link I posted has a catch report and its quite good so check it out and Good Luck,

I checked out this link recently .... very useful ,,, thanks again Bobby!

Recent reports say silver bass might still be in the area and have slowed the eye catch down for a while ... here's a link >>> Detroit river walleye

re: May 27 - Were in the tough couple weeks where it's almost impossible to get a jig to the bottom.  Silver bass are thick and will be there for at least another 10 days.  Once they move out there will be plenty of walleye still around.  In the meantime just head out to Lake Erie - the fish are about 6 miles south of the river near the Bell Buoy.

Other reports that I've read from Lake Erie ...
Deeper waters - 1.5 2.5lbs average ... silver bass (May 27)
Shore fish - much smaller
Tips: Look for the Gulls!

Wish you luck Schwen .... looking forward to your fishin' report

Well...the Silver bass report was right. I caught 3, decent size...but no Pickeral. I also landed..(lol)1 baby perch, but at least he didn't swallow the hook. I was using worms, then minnows....minnows worked better! I have been using strictly pickeral rigs, but I would love some feedback as to using other options. Goin back out in the AM....hope to have more luck...!!!!!!!

Nice to here the fish were there Schwen... Reports say its been tough getting the eyes when  the silver are running ... If you can get down deep enough, I've heard larger crankbaits are a good way to start ... we used longer thin lures (5-6inches) with brighter colors (chartreuse, red, silver, pink) when fishing murky waters earlier this year... Some fishers have been using a spinner - spoon combo. I haven't tried this set-up yet, but it's got me curious!
Good Luck and please posts some pics eh! got me droolin' ...hahaha ... have fun buddy!

Went out at 7am to the docks at Reaume Park...just down river from the bridge spot. The silver bass are running there, as are the Perch. I was out for a few hours, caught 7, but none picture worthy. I did manage a double header on a pickeral rig, but that was the hilight of my day...lol..Thanks for the tips dokdok...hope to post worthy pics soon...peace!!!

Dok and I had plans today for a Detroit walleye river run and we were going to check out the Leamington marina tornado damage too but bad weather turned us off ...  >:(
Maybe a local run might cheer us up ... hope the weather clears for a few hours

Been catching plenty of perch, Silver bass and...ughh...Sheephead...but no pickeral...yet!! I caught a 4-5 LB sheephead, then a 1/2 hr later, my buddy caught at least an 8 or better...it snapped his line as we were landing it. Unfortunately, for him, it never got out of the water.....so it doesn't count...lol. As for Leamington, it sure got walloped...have not been down there yet...Keep Fishin... ;D

For me any fish is good catchin' but I have my favorites too ...
I don't mind catchin' the odd sheephead when the fishin' is slow ... and an 8 pounder would have felt like you were pulling up a 20lb anchor! hahaha
My twin brother would get a charge out of that  :D
I also heard the perch were turning on quite well now eh ... I received reports from fishers near Port Glascow (Lake Erie) who landed a bucket full of fish yesterday ... some nice size perch caught easily with minnow / jig head rigs in just a few hours.
Well, Good luck finding those eyes Schwen ... Hope you catcha monster!
