Indo-Pacific Catches
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:59:40 AM »
Traveled between Nov 25, 2010 to Dec 9, 2010

Phuket, Khao Sok, Koh Samui, Perth and Langkawi

Total fishing hours was 37 hours between the 13 days.

Fish from Phuket, Thailand

6” Indo-Pacific Sergeant Major (Technique: Light float rig, 8lb fluoro, #16 hook, shrimp)

5” A species of anthias (Technique: Light float rig, 8lb fluoro, #16 hook, shrimp)

7” Bluefin Trevally (Technique: Light float rig, 8lb fluoro, #16 hook, shrimp)

6” Whitespotted Rabbitfish (Technique: Light float rig, 8lb fluoro, #16 hook, 3/4" segment of Gulp! Sandworm Camo)

6” A species of wrasse (Technique: Light float rig, 8lb fluoro, #16 hook, 3/4" segment of Gulp! Sandworm Camo)

Fish from Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

9” Giant Kissing Gourami (Technique: Freelining, 8lb fluoro, #8 baitholder hook, live cricket)

11” A species of Tinfoil Barb (Technique: Freelining, 8lb fluoro, #8 baitholder hook, live cricket)

9” Grey Featherback (Technique: Freelining, 8lb fluoro, #8 baitholder hook, live cricket)

13” Transversed Bar-Barb (Hampala Barb aka Jungle Perch) (Technique: Freelining, 8lb fluoro, #8 baitholder hook, live cricket)

9” Golden Barred Gourami (Technique: Freelining, 8lb fluoro, #8 baitholder hook, live cricket)

Fish from Koh Samui, Thailand

Bait for Mekong Catfish and Siamese Carp (Redtail Catfish bit sardines instead), braid leader, 100lb mono mainline, Shimano Baitfeeder reels, Beastmaster rods.

25lb Giant Barb (aka Siamese Carp)

70lb Giant Mekong Catfish

Fish on!

60lb Mekong Catfish

Last cast…I’ve been waiting for this fish all day…

40kg Redtail Catfish

Fish from Perth, Australia

We were fishing in 180 meters of water jigging 400g knife jigs, 50lb braid with 80lb fluorocarbon leader

5-foot Bronze Whaler Shark…cut the line before we got it to the surface :(

Samsonfish!!! Everyone was bunched up at the back of the boat and there were some line tangles...I chose the bow instead where there were even a couple of lean-to stools. Jigged for 3 hours after the shark and finally hooked up on one of the drop. Took about 15 minutes to bring it up…

How big?

Smallest adult on the boat caught the biggest fish  All 40kg worth and they made me hold it up.

Annoying pufferfish…the harbour was full of them and there was no way to get way from them. They even chewed up soft plastic lures and they were so thick I even snagged them using crankbaits and Kastmasters

7” Sand whiting (I think…) (Technique: Split shot rig, 8lb mainline, 4lb fluoro leader, #16 hook, 3/4" segment of Gulp! sandworm, slow retrieve)

Fish from Langkawi, Malaysia

5” Fingermark snapper (Technique: 6-wt fly rod, WF-6F fly line, 12lb leader, #14 gold bead hares ear nymph)

7” A species of needlefish (Technique: 6-wt fly rod, WF-6F fly line, 12lb leader, #14 gold bead hares ear nymph)

5” Some kind of toothy goby (Technique: 6-wt fly rod, WF-6F fly line, 12lb leader, #14 gold bead hares ear nymph)

7” Indo-Pacific Tarpon (aka oxeye herring) (Technique: 6-wt fly rod, WF-6F fly line, 12lb leader, #14 gold bead hares ear nymph...was told Crazy Charlies in size #6 - #2...but even those were too big. Watched for rolling tarpon and cast to the area then a fast, short strip. They usually travel in a small pod and there might be multiple hits during one retrieve...look for the mouth of creeks and rivers with mangrove swamps...low tide is best since high tide brings in larger predators and the juvenile tarpon clears the area. Large rivers with mangrove swamps will have larger juvenile specimens up to 5lbs...larger ones are less common.)

6” A species of grunter (Technique: 6-wt fly rod, WF-6F fly line, 12lb leader, #14 gold bead hares ear nymph...incoming tide, )

13” Great Barracuda (Technique: 30lb braid mainline, 25lb fluoro leader, 3/8oz jighead with T&C Lure clear/red flake, also caught another similar sized one with a 1/8oz jighead with 2" pink Berkley T-Tail under a set of floating docks)

13” Talang Queenfish (TASTY!!!) (Technique: 30lb braid mainline, 25lb fluoro leader, 2" Excalibre Suspending Mystic Minnow, about 1/8oz equivalent split shot pinched in front of lure to add some weight for casting and to keep the lure running just under the surface, retriever as fast as you can reel with a short with rapid twitch. I found a good school of them and there were about 10 fish in the school between 1lb to about 3lbs.)

7” Five Banded Archerfish (These fish were so picky…but I finally fooled them using a hopper pattern on the fly rod )

Regrets…

1) Repeatedly losing Giant Needlefish by having them jumped off the hook…in Phuket and in Langkawi

2) Losing a 2lb Giant Snakehead at boat side, and missing another solid strike from a much bigger one :(

3) Missing a solid arapaima hit at Koh Samui

4) Didn’t have much time to fish more in Perth

5) Couldn’t find any Giant Trevally or groupers in Langkawi

6) Tami lives in Washington State :?

hey Ken,
those are some nice fish any of them good to eat?  you should be writing a book.  I was watching WFN the other week and there was a guy who had caught 1000 different fish from around the world what do you think you're at???

Horsie, that samsonfish was pulling me toward the rail  ;D ;D ;D  But the other fish like the mekong and the redtail catfish were not too bad at all. When you set the drag right, it won't be any problem.

HunterPower, yeah, I corresponded with Steve before. He's a great guy to chat with and he's my inspiration  ;D ;D ;D  So far I'm up to 161 species  :)  I'm still in Hong Kong so we'll see if I can add a few more here in Hong Kong.  :)

Great photos of the fish you caught Ken. Some of them look like the fish I had in my aquarium only yours are much much larger.
