Had a Great Day on Simcoe

(1/2) > >>

Ice Fishing Ham:

Myself and a friend (Relic) rented a  hut from Ice Fishing Outfitters at Virginia Beach. The day started  with a comedy act. From the time they registered to the time they got  out of the trailer, two brothers from Hamilton were throwing insults  at each other, all of it in good fun. Mike and his helper set us up  in a hut with a vented heater and a portable cook stove. More on that  later.

Most of the fishing was done by sight  as the water clear, about 12 feet deep and the hut had 2 huge holes  which offered a great view of the bottom. We tried different jigs  plastics and minnows. As usually the perch came through in schools  with the jumbo on their own. When the bite was on they went after  just about anything.

At one point things got slow so I put  on a large jigging spoon to see if it would attract something. The  reaction from Relic proved it did, I looked down  and there was a  pike eyeing my jig.  Relic wanted nothing to do with it so he stared  to pull his 4 lb line out and the pike hit his jig and a way it went.  I'm trying to find my camera and Relic is to say the least calm at  this point. He eventually brought it in and I pulled it out of the  hole, got a picture released him. Later 3 more pike eye our jigs but  only one hit and eventually spit the hook. What excitement.

I had just finish cooking my burger on  the portable stove, had a bun balance over the burner toasting it,  Relic had finished his. My jigging line had rapped its self around  Relics line and I was trying to untangle it. Then all hell broke  loose, with only one line down the hole a school of jumbos (yes a  school of jumbos) came through and away went my line. I can write a  paragraph on what took place in the next few minutes.  But I'll just  tell you how things were after. My jigging line was cut to free up  Relics line, my bun was burnt, my burger was cold, the hut was smoky  from the burnt bun, the container of ketchup, mustard and relish was  upside down on the floor want a mess. The good side to all this was  we had landed 7 jumbos during the mayhem.

This has to be one of the best ice  fishing outings I've been on, We'll be talking about it for a long  time. In the end we had sore backs from looking down the hole, sore  sides from laughing and 17 nice size perch.

Enjoy the photo's
