Tips on catching Finicky Bass in Summer

(1/1)

citybassboy:
In summer, when I find the bass are not very active and are sluggish, I know that there are still many baits that will entice them to strike. First off, I'll turn to my best friend- the wacky rig.The wacky rig is a simple technique that can be used by anyone. To rig it, I use a #1 Gamakatsu Octopus Hook and a plain senko (you might like to use some other type of worm). I find the plain senko doesn't attract too much attention as a curly tail worm would and because the bass are always seeing so much commotion in baits, that if you change to a more subtle presentation, they won't be able to resist it! Also as the senko falls, the ends of the senko flutter in the water which bass absolutely love. Besides a wacky rig for summer bass, you could also use a shaky head or a drop-shot. These techniques are all finesse presentations that are easy to fish and will load up the livewell. This is just my opinion of what to do on a hot summer day and hopefully it'll help you catch more fish on the water as well.

I mainly only use wacky rig and find it works better then anything else by far. Tough to use in weeds is the only down fall but if you can find some open pockets it's killer.  I also use same hooks as you, I always watch my line and try to set as quick as possible to prevent deep hook sets, rarely get any death sets,  I throw all my bass back as well.  I just love tossing wacky nothing can get you the numbers this set up produces.  I sometimes use small pieces of plastic tubing to help keep the senko on as well.  My favourite brands are Yum, Gary Yamasoto but they all do the trick. Favourite colours are watermelon, pink and root beer yellow tip.

Thanks for replying martycoo.  I always use Gary Yamamoto's Yamasenko. I will throw the wacky rig ANYWHERE! I fished it from 30ft. all the way down to 2ft of timber and weeds. The trick to fishing super-shallow weeds is to cast as far as you can or aim somewhere if you see some nice structure or something, then as it falls, just before it gets aught in the weeds, you twitch it a little so you can bring it back up and still let the bass ee it clearly.

Thanks for tips, I will try that next summer, I fish a river mainly for Smallies and have had good success in the weeds on scum frogs or other weedless frog products.  Got to think like the fish to catch the fish.   Your going to do really well in this industry, keep at er buddy!
