Hi IceAngler650,
As far as I know, there is very little activity on this board for rainbow / fly fishing ... it's not to say the interest isn't there :D Thx for the post.
I was hoping to try the rainbow hunt this fall ... a neighbor frequently talks about his annual trips each year and it's got me itching to try ... his trip this year was cancelled due to local weather (tornado damage in the region). So maybe next fall.
Like you I lack the proper fly rigs/ equipment; but I am curious if one could be caught with just a spinning rod.
With every new species, I try and do a lot of research, starting off with public resources; thru' forums and newspapers, fishing regs etc. I find the local newspapers are great for general knowledge.
Some of the best tips can be found in older articles / releases ... Good Luck!
Here's a couple links:
Goderich country ...Maitland River, the Nine-Mile to the north and the Bayfield River; all good rivers for rainbow trout
Dave (Big Wave) Trotter caused a big splash at the Maitland Falls Valley Fishing Derby

More Research: I was hoping to try the Saugeen River region (north of London). Probably about a 4 hour + drive for you from Port Hope ...
Plans get broken eh... maybe next year.
Here's some links for the area, looks like a great spot and plenty of volunteers to support the fishery there too! (also looking for more thou ... great cause)

Yes guys you can catch them on standard spinning out fits.
For bottom bouncing and float fishing use a lighter leader than your "heavy line". I would say around 6lb floro at the most.
But do not forget your spinners. Mepps, Panther martins and others are used.
With spinners, cast strait across the creek. With a slow retrieve.....and I mean slow....just enough to spin the blade.
I used to find that most spinner fish came from the bottom half of the holes.

Jack
