Day trip to Sarnia - Point Edward yesterday ...
I wanted to check out the walleye fishing scene in this area and take in the scenery of many boats and ships travelling the straits to the Great Lakes.
I spotted some fishers trying there luck but nothing hooked during the day ...
I chatted with a local from the area and he shared some positive and negative aspects of the recreational fishing industry for this area.
Let me tell ya, speaking with a fella fisher with 25 + years of experience was a treat! Glad I met him
Here's the positive for the area ....
He says, if your looking to catch walleye, start fishing at 9:00pm ... all you need is a twister on a medium sized (sharp) hook ... his fav was a red headed twister and white tail . Claims he lands a few each time he goes out using this method .... and fishing in August is slow (too hot) ,,, September is the month when the larger ones begin to feed.
Here's the negative ...
The walleye fishing is not what it use to be he says.... the bait fish population is drastically dwindling and mainly because of the over population of the cormorants. These birds are in huge numbers now and increase each year .... There favorite food is the bait fish and they can be seen diving deep into the lakes to feed. He's of the opinion that controls should be put in place to regulate the population of these birds. Walleye population will return if the bait fish population increases.
So my question to all fishers out there, Do you have the same problems in your area? Should the government control the population of these birds? Here's a news link related to this issue ...
