Georgian Bay Surprise
« on: August 31, 2010, 05:23:56 PM »
Took a spur of the moment trip out on the Bay last night and worked north on the west side of Christian. Couldn't get water temps above 125 feet so ran deeper than normal track. Marked quite a few good hooks in the 95 to 105 range so set a rod at that level. The 129 foot rod goes off immediately thereafter - with a decent 'bow!! Reset and the high rod goes off. Here's the surprise - an Atlantic ???. Quite feisty with some good acrobatics near the boat. Landed three more 'bows before we pulled the plug. Lots of good hooks last night but no suicidal chinooks.
Would this Atlantic have been navigationally challenged or are they being stocked in the Upper Great Lakes??

I think the mystery on the Atlantic has been solved. Apparently a university in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan has been stocking Atlantics in the St. Mary's River. Guess this one was somewhat nomadic.
Regardless, Grandma Jen and I just had the nicest BBQ'd salmon of the season.

I received information and a website for the Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan that has been stocking Atlantics since 1987 on an annual basis. The salmon are released in the St. Mary's River. One interesting fact was that these clipped and tagged salmon have been caught in all five of the Great Lakes as well as Georgian Bay. The one we took was not tagged or clipped so it would seem that some natural reproduction is taking place. LSSU stocks their salmon as yearlings which likely results in much better survival rates than those that go in the swim as fingerlings.
