Have fished some online tournies with Donovan, that guy pulls out some monster channel cats in the summer as well.   Great tips.  I saw the worms were already out last night, time to start picking.   I made up a small box to store them in and it just goes in the bottom of the fridge, I use the bedding you buy from any tackle store and it keeps them alive for months on end.  If you do find some dead ones in there, usually around the top and they must be removed ASAP to prevent more of the worms from doing the same.   I find using the headlamps that clip on your hat work well for keeping your hands free and if you can clip a container to your waste you can have a hay day picking those worms, have had some nights where I get up to 500 worms in a short time, tread lightly.
Another tip if you have a good area for leeches, take a tin coffee can seal the top really well after baiting it with chicken liver, take a good size round nail and poke as many holes in it as you can, the nail will make the tin pointy and prevent the leeches from getting back out, leave it overnight and check to see results at sun up.   Bait gets expensive if you fish alot so any money saved will help out with buying more tackle and such, I find worms to be way over priced now adays with some guys charging up to $4-5 a dozen, the amount of worms I use in a summer it's just logical to spend a bit of time catching my own.  Great thread DokDok keep the tips coming guys!

Just to add to your worm picking tips Mike. Along with having your worm container on your waist, have a can filled with saw dust.
The saw dust is an easy way to dry out your fingers, making them drier to grab those slippery buggers.

Hey Marty

You mention the Price of worms at $4-$5.

When we fished Deseronto around '94 you could buy worms for $1 a Doz at Moon's Just up the road from the launch.

Is he still there? He was the local Fire Chief and I always had a good chat, picked up worms and some good "tips".

At $4-5 a Doz I think I will see how the picking goes in my yard.

I always like picking worms and it is something my son loves to do as well(he is 7 now). We both go out with LED headlamps on. It has been a tradition for more years than I care to remember that we/I stock up before trout opener every year. Thanks for the sawdust tip Jack.. never thought of it, I usually wear dirty old jeans...lol

That is a great tip Jack, ty.  Rick  the man your speaking of at moons passed away few years back, but I know there is still someone there holding down the shop, pretty sure his wife might still live in the house but almost positive she sold the business to someone, still a great little shop. I agree Peachy picking worms can be a blast, especially with the kiddies involved, its the catch before the big catch!!!

for worm picking use a red lens on your light  they dont take off so fast. a bit harder to see them, but look for the "shine"!

How to Fish for Bullhead Catfish - Tips and Techniques

Nothing beats mudcat fishing with the young lads.  I also take my scented bait with me, its makes me gag came in a container and is specifically for cats, chum it around the area  and cast your worm into that area. Another good bait to use is canned corn, and you might get into a carp using that as well.  Ive been mudcat fishing since I was really young with my Grandpa and have had so much fun every year doing this.  Good eating fish as well.

i do that all the time but we finally went to sail and bought a worm farm it comes with food and bedding i caught some small dew worms and put em in there and they are getting pretty big and i put some small garden worms in for trout i think the food makes their skin a little more tough so worms last a little longer.
