Why Should I Buy a Custom Ice Fishing Rod?
« on: August 05, 2011, 04:56:56 AM »

First of all I'm not trying to put  anyone or company on the spot with this post.

I know what it is to buy quality. My  tools, electronics, computer, amateur radio equipment, photo gear,  clothing etc are of good quality. They're not the top of the line nor  the bottom nor do I pay for a designers name splashed over every  thing in site. I usually know what I'm getting and that it will last.  If its an expensive item I will research the crap out of it before I  put my money down.

Now for my question what does a custom  made ice fishing rod have that one from CTC, Bass Pro etc  does not?

I know a custom rod will be more  expensive (how much I don't know) so what do I get for this extra  cost?

One more thing I will always like  dealing with the owner operator business first.

A custom rod is exactly that. A rod that is made to your specs.

Have you ever looked at a rod in any store and liked it except you wish it had a longer rear grip? Or you wish it was a casting rod instead of a spinning rod? This goes for all rods not just Ice rods.

Perhaps you wanted a rod that was 32" long but very stiff, with a Tennessee handle and slip rings, large guides and tip top, with blue and white wraps and a hookkeeper on the bottom of the rod.  Could you find that in CTC? I don't think so but I could make one for you.

As for the cost of a rod as compared to a factory build I don't feel that my prices are out line but I would not want to discuss prices on the net because each rod will vary depending on the features you want.

I see you are in Bowmanville  so if you wish to come over to the shop and discuss this further feel free to give me a call and we can meet.

hey there IFH...

I like you buy good quality items... not the highest price but the ones(in my opinion) perform the best for me. The things that I use the most are usually the ones that I spend the most amount of time researching to make sure it will perform the way I want. I have 14 ice rods and they range from ultra lite to med heavy. I have looked at dozens over the years and have bought 4 rods to use for whitefish and lakers but they have all had good and bad points.

I would love to be able to talk to someone and get what I would like in a rod. I figure if I put a value on the time I have spent looking at them and the ones I have bought it would balance out.

It's a valid question - I would have been asking the same.  I expect its not a lot different from buying a custom made suit. Not everyone wants one and off the rack is good for most. For some its purely subjective - I know what I want in a rod and I want someone to make it exactly the way I want it to be.

We can all buy rods from our local shops and box stores and nothing wrong with that. I'd be doing that today if I hadnt of met Rolly.

For me it came about the opposite way - I met Rolly, began to understand what he could offer, saw a couple of his rods, (one which was donated as a prize in our Hardwater Challenge), liked what I saw, and then I talked to him about my ideal summer rod. And while there are many rods out there and most will work great for me - its so much different especially when the fish is on, to have a rod exactly as you wanted it. Now that I got some use of my summer rod, I was able to feel if the spinnerbait wasnt sitting right as we trolled, or if there were weeds on it. It will sound dumb but I enjoyed catching the fish in a different way this last trip. I wouldnt want another rod at all now.
I cant wait to do the same on the ice this winter. Some guys are making some great points about their ice rod needs, but I dont want one as long as them. I want it a couple inches shorter so it packs properly in my bag. So that will be one of the things I look for when I go to Rolly for an ice rod.
regards, Mike.
Good things come, to those who bait.

Thanks for the replies and invitation Rolly. From your ad I know where you are in Bowmanville, once the summer is over I'll give you a call to set-up a visit.

It’s funny after these reply’s I'm not sure what I want in an ice fishing rod. I'll have lots of questions for you Rolly come September.
