Ice fishing Rods
« on: July 29, 2011, 08:45:41 PM »
Folks
I will be building up Ice fishing rods for this winters season. They will be either spinning or casting and in a variety of Lengths and powers.

I will be in discussion with Mike and a few others to determine what the general concensus is of a good whitefish rod, Laker rod and a perch rod.

Well... being that I missed most of last ice season( and a good chunk of the spring and early summer), I am looking forward to drilling my first hole.. but I also want to take advantage of this great weather so am out on the boat as much as possible   ;D .

I would like to see a medium 30-32" spinning rod that has 5+ guides on it with a solid back bone to fight the bigger fish but a sensitive tip to detect the light bite of the whitefish. The guides need to be large enough so they don't freeze up for those of us that like to sit on our buckets outside.

Thanks,
Peachy

I've never bought a custom rod ... but after reading some of the posts here, I must admit that its peaked my interest.

Whitefishin' ...
Personally I would prefer an ice fishing rod with an extended grip, larger in diameter then a standard sized ice fishing rod ...
This would certainly help with me arthritis and might give a fisher more circulation in the hands which seems to be the first part of the body to get iced up!
Softer grip would be great, but sensitive enough to feel a light bite for lures set at 100 plus feet.
Hollowed butt grip would be good too; this Would allow to place some heat in the grip when needed or allow storage room for an additional lure or two.

I'd like a fast rod tip, one that is visible to old watery eyes that have been exposed to cold, windy weather conditions.
I'd like to see larger sized line guides that are easy to thread a 10lb line on a winters day while wearing a pair of light winter gloves.
As far as the number of guides ... I'm no designer, so match the # of guides to the rod specs rated for a 10lb fish and a lure weight of a standard badboyz.

Rod length ... Like the 35- 36" length one piece rod, dark color with a yellow or orange tip. (More visible in darkened light conditions)

If you can design something like this that is affordable, I'd probably by one!

I use 3 guides and a tip top for a 30- 32 " rod. A size 20,12,8 and an 8 tip. for and 36" add one guide. The normal right now is a 4" cork rear grip, an spinning seat and a 2-21/2" fore grip with a hookkeeper.

I can and have used the Black EVA (black foam) handles if that is what is preferred. I can also build with a tennesse handle and slip rigs.

Oldphart I have even built a 48" spiral wrapped ice fishing rod for someone fishing Simcoe.

I am open to suggestions.
