Hey Rick,

A fellow I used to work with, picked up a 24 inch stove - somewhere - prob off a street in Newmarket....lol - removed the burners - and the back (which held the knobs for the burners) - wired the biggest burner from the stove to a 110v cord, placed it (screwed it down on the floor of the oven) in the oven; used a cast iron fry pan for his chips - the racks which were in the stove were perfect and Presto - Homemade Smoker - his fish/meat were excellent - till he cut me off.. ::)

Cool idea - I'm sure there are better ways - maybe some of the members have a homemade smoker and will share there design.

  Here's a link to a Popular Mechanics  article on making a smoker. It might be more then what you're  looking for.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to-plans/metalworking/3372796

The photos below are of a smoker I made  out of a wood crate. Not shown are 3 x 500 watt bar heaters. They are  located behind the lower door. Each one has its own switch. A small  frying pan sits on them and with wood chips in it. It's hard to get  the temperature up but it works great for making beef jerky.

I have a small smoker which I purchased used last summer ... I was keen on smoking some pork ribs at the time but never seemed to have the time to do it  ::)

I was looking for plans to make one as well and came across this site;
Don't let the name fool ya hahaha ... for under $50 bucks you could have something to get the job done. when you loose interest it could be converted back to a trash can ...

  Thats a slick setup nice and simple and  inexpensive. However I do have a problem with the coating on the  metal. I'm not sure if its plating or galvanizing. In any case I'm  concerned if there would be any nasty stuff given off when the metal  gets heated.
