Member Input - Let's hear your thought's.
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:32:28 AM »
Hi everyone,
Got into a discussion yesterday with a neighbor and GoFish member - "Rayburn", about - when is a good time to buy a boat.
After what seemed like an endless conversation, we both - sort of - agreed on the annual TO Boat Show.
I'd like to hear comments from other members - especially those that waited to make the buy at a Boat show.
Rayburn has been looking hard, but with the price of fuel and time involved in searching out and visiting sellers - he's frustrated.
Your thoughts and comments are most appreciated.

:) I at one point had a plan to purchase a boat and go fishing all the time, instead i bought a trailer parked it in a camp ground on a river and fish for trout (not very luck-others are).  When i was going to buy a boat I found it easier to look on line at first as you can get all the information on there and the companies send you brochures on all thier differnet types of boats.  then i would go out to local dealers or shows and know what i was sort of looking for.  I guess it would depend on what you were looking for and $$$$$$.  You can get great deals at the TO show.  One freind of mine had an idea of a boat but looked into the cost and realized he alone could not afford it so he spoke to a few freinds and they all agreed to go in together and buy a boat, they split all the costs 3 ways which is great but we all know this will in the end lead to some trouble.....anyways if i were still looking into buying a boat I would have to say the TO Boat Show would be a good bet as the venders are either trying to get rid of the old models or promoting the new models and there are some great deals to be offered to the consumer. ;D

Great comeback!
I knew of a couple fellows down in Chatham - split on a boat - worked out okay for them - but as you infer, ya never know.
As far as the dealers go - he sent out a few emails requesting information - out of 5, I believe, Legend was the only reply directing him to there showroom in Barrie.
They have a nice online site, Pic's, Styles, and cost - actually the only boat manufacturer that shows there retail prices online - amazing the rest of the mfg's treat it like a big secret........lol

I always enjoy going to the boat show, even if not in the immediate market for a boat (but I came close last year). It's great for seeing different manufacturers / marinas display their stuff, practically side by side, and let you compare features & prices. What you'll see is a mix of new and new-noncurrent models, and sometimes, a motor thats a year or two old on a new boat. If you have a budget in mind, you can see what's available in that range. You also get to see a lot of accessories like fish finders, electronics etc..And it an be akin to going into a ferrari dealership - you can dream a little :)

We talked about the fall (Oct/Nov), and looking for a deal then, but your hauling it home to store for 6 months + add in the insurance for the boat, motor, trailer, shrink wrap etc. etc.
Looks like the Boat Show is the ticket.

Mike you mentioned Ferrari - I agree - but, like all buyers, we try hard to avoid the
Fiat - or more commonly referred to - Fix it again Tony........... :)

my apologies to all Fiat owners,

Laffin, I hear you.
As an aside I had a summer job as a Lot Person at a Fiat / Suzuki dealership back in 1981. Lots of fun driving all the brand new cars around. Fiat Spyders, X19's, Lancia Zagato's and the Suzuki XJ410 which had an 800 cc motor back then. The Fiats were shipped over by sea, and exposed to the air/salt water so I had to go over every inch of it to make sure there wasnt any hint of rust anywhere. Fun cars to drive too.

Back on topic though: I dont know if there's any brand of boat or outboard that I wouldnt recommend though..Certainly the technology used in outboards today make them very sophisticated. I think many have more preferences in the boat side of things, which is why the boat show makes such great sense. You can talk to the dealers and sometimes the manufacturers and get their input before making a decision. At least help you narrow down your selection for when you do buy.

So true Mike. He's looking at this style/type of boat:

http://legendboats.com/en/view/boat/2011_16_xtreme

$$$'s add up real fast - nice looking boat though - lot's of perks - warranty seems darn good - Unfortunately, the dealers are still stuck on retail pricing on non-current models.....notwithstanding the fact - depreciation is huge - when you 1st turn that key.

Any member have a Legend Boat. Pro's/Con's??

great topic guys.....i do own a legend, and although it is only a14 foot tiller model ,i have had no problems with the boat at all ....boat is actually built by Starcraft Marine ....heavy gauge aluminum and no leaks ......i have owned it for 5 years now ....the only thing i would mention to be careful of is too small an engine .....all the package deals shown are usually under powered outboards for the size of boat .....i ended up buying a larger outboard after a couple of years and i wished i would have done it sooner ....some sales people may only be interested in the sale ....i recommend either maximize the outboard to the max or at least 75% of the max recommended....it usually adds a lot to the price but you will be much happier in the long run ......upgrading later like i did costs more than when you buy and it is much easier to do if your borrowing the cash to purchase in the first place ....just my opinion, and i would definately look at another legend if i were buying again .....but most all makes out there have some great features and all are good quality

Good points Rick, re Engine size - and I agree. I mentioned this to Ray as we looked over the Legend stuff this pm - upgrading would add an additional $5500.00 but when your into $15M might just as well go for the ring.
As an aside, I kinda thought that the 50 was bare minimum - 75hp would push that vessel along quite nicely.
Thanks for the input,
bobby

Enjoyed the read Bobby / gofishers...

I haven't been bitten by the desire to own motor powered boats. Nice to look at and a pleasure to ride for sure, but given a chose, a canoe and a backwater stream suites me fine ... but,

If my life style suddenly changed and I could justify the economic and environmental impacts of owning a power boat, I would certainly begin benchmarking what they had to offer at local boat shows ... from what I've read on the subject best price can be had on the last day of the event, when vendors try to recoup their setup costs (rental space, transit, fuel etc) ...

Patience is needed for the frugal minded ... some say best deals can be had at the dealers location ... and I guess it depends on what you want and whether current inventory is available. When deciding between one model or the other, Service plays a key role.
Good Luck!
My 2cents ... When buying big ticket items, support your local vendor  ;D

Great Links dokdok.

Guess there's always going to be Pros and Cons as to "when/where to buy".

I like the Tip about doing your homework during a show, then showing up on the last day to try and cut the best deal. Makes a lot of sense, especially if the Rep's are trying to recoup there show costs.
