Are you keeping Betsy?
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:35:22 PM »
Just Curious ....
I don't own a truck or vehicle that you would call a big gas guzzler ... but I was wondering for those that do, Are you thinking about trading it in?  :o

I read an article that raises some issues for those in the market for something new ... before you send Betsy to the car lot or bone yard , I suggest you have a read first ... Story: Before you dump Guzzler

Interesting topic. And I have to agree you need to look at ALL the numbers before deciding. If you happen to be in the market for a vehicle is one thing, but you'll probably lost equity in your trade in (if you dont want it because of then gas mileage, then who will?)
Odlly enough, my Ford F150 with a 5.4 litre engine is noticeably more fuel efficient that my Ranger with a 4.0 litre was. So while it hurts to fill up at the pump, I remember I still pay less now per kilomtre than with my 'economy truck'. I'm lucky that I dont commute like I used to, and am driving about 1/3 what I used to. So I'll economize by driving less.
Good things come, to those who bait.

good read dok........but most of us on here need our bigger vehicles to use our toys with (towing, carrying or just hauling equipment)......i drive 102 km everyday to work , but i`m not about to give up all my stuff to save a few bucks .....buying a smaller vehicle would limit their use .....so adding these thoughts to what the article says as well .....i`ll keep my SUV ......at least for now ....i`m actually thinking of a bigger pickup in the very near future .....may be a good time for buying gas guzzlers....lol...

Good article. Its too bad that other  companies and business are going to suffer do the high price of gas.  I have only so much money to play with at the end of the week. That  amount is less do to the price of gas.

For example: I often meet a group of  friends for breakfast on Saturday mornings. The drive is 24 miles  round trip. My truck gets about 24 miles per gallon. At $1.30 a  liter, a gallon cost $5.90. When gas was a $1 a squirt is was $4.54  per gallon, thats an increase of $1.36.

I know it's only an increase of  a buck  36 but it's putting it over the edge. Factoring in food, tip and gas   a couple of eggs, bacon, toast and coffee is costing over $17. I wont  be going as often, I'll miss the conversations. We've almost got the  problems of the world solved.

Interesting to see what happens to the  economy. If I remember correctly the last sudden increase in gas  price was followed by the last recession.

Love this line! Too bad the 1.36 will keep them only at almost  ???
But I appreciate your point. I've been seeing it for a few months now.. friends deciding not to hook up or partake, due to the costs.

Remember Joe Clark - 1979

His proposal to convert Canadians To natural gas and propane - both much cleaner than gasoline - brought nothing but grief for him and laughter from the opposition and the uninformed voter.

Then as PM his failed attempted to dismantle Petro Canada, and an 18 cent gas tax to reduce a huge budget def. did him in as PM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Clark

Prime minister
On June 4, 1979, the day before his 40th birthday, Clark was sworn in as Canada's youngest prime minister, after defeating the Liberal Party in the May 1979 general election. Clark was the first Progressive Conservative to head Canada's federal government since the defeat of John Diefenbaker's Progressive Conservative government in the 1963 election.
With a minority government in the House of Commons, Clark had to rely on the support of the Social Credit Party, with its six seats, or the New Democratic Party (NDP), with its 26 seats. At the time, Opposition leader Trudeau said that he would allow the Progressive Conservatives a chance to govern, though he warned the Prime Minister against dismantling Petro-Canada.

The vote of non-confidence ended Clark's Prime Ministership - 9 months less a day later.

..............I especially enjoyed PTrud remark re: allowing Joey to govern........what a joke/so nice of him -  and 47 million wasted on 2 needless elections (in circa 1979 dollars)

IMHO, We live in a Country loaded with billions of metric cubic feet of Natural Gas (and Propane) - a resource that should have been tapped for vehicles 30 years ago.

Each and every politician should hang there heads in shame - not only for catering to big oil but the 3 decades of Enviromental crap since 1979 that has been spewed into OUR air.

Electricity and a natural gas to run your car it might be cheap now. But wait until they figure out a way to add road tax and some other tax to your hydro bill or heating bill.

From dok's Globe Article;

The fundamental economics still held. With natural gas typically costing 20 to 30 per cent below gasoline, a vehicle owner driving 40,000 kilometres a year could recover their upfront premium of about $6,000 in less than five years. A high-mileage taxi or small business owner would be ahead after a couple of years.

---And, with the recent runup in gasoline pricing, natural gas is now 40 per cent below gasoline.---

''This option for transportation has never been more relevant, considering the air quality and low carbon emission benefits of natural gas vehicles.''

Interesting article with a number of valid considerations offered. The point made concerning rapid cost raises being followed by similar decreases is, however, a surmise over which I won't be holding my breath.
Regardless of where we end up with fuel costs for our automobiles and trucks, the fact remains that personal travel is so deeply ingrained in North Americans that we will eventually accept our fate and return to existing driving habits after a relatively brief period of bitchin' and complainin'.
Anyone want to bet that some well qualified number cruncher or bean counter can produce statistics that will "prove" that even at current costs per Litre or gallon that fuel is cheaper now, based on average salaries, than it was 40, or whatever, years ago???
I agree that Joe Six-Pack is presently madder than hell and has every right to be but revisit this issue in six-months and the Ford F-150 will still be the largest selling vehicle in Canada and the ratio of power boats to sail boats won't be appreciably changed over current ratios.
Many years have passed since I was young enough to know everything!!

Would you buy Regular instead of Premium to save a few bucks?
Some drivers are considering it ... (Damn Economy  >:( )
