Ice huts, best size?
« on: December 28, 2011, 09:19:34 AM »
I'm looking forward to this ice season can't wait to get some big lunkers :-)
Think I'm going to build an ice hut here in next few weeks can't decide what size to make it 8x6 or
8x8 or maybe 6x10 any suggestions?

Hi Big Fisher
Is there a reason for not considering a portable - they work out cheaper in the long run. (Freedom to move quickly on ice - and to fish many different lakes - is the main reason I chose a portable.)

thats a cool design too. has the appearance of looking 'tippy' but I'm sure its not. any idea what it's worth? My worry with that one is if you left it out on the ice, would it be there when you came back. But give them A+ for offering it!
Good things come, to those who bait.

Hi Bobbyb
the reason im looking to build a hut instead of a pop up is that I don't have the means to get a pop up and all my stuff out to the lake everytime I go so I figured I would build one that I could leave on the lake with all my stuff in it.

Hi Big Fisher,
If your looking for something inexpensive to start with consider this type of build:

Go to your local Snowmobile dealer to acquire your skid base in Spruce - free to take away - usually 4' or 5' wide by 8' length
Fill in the sides all around with what the opening will take - i.e. 2" x 3" spruce
Use 3/8 Exterior Ply for the ice side - Use 5/8 Exterior Grade Ply for the interior floor - Treat with Minwax Spar Urethane - 2 coats - 3 would be better. If you are unable to paint due to temps then go without.
Use 2 x 2 's for framing walls and roof gables
Once framed you have several options - newsprint sheets if you can find them or 1/4" plywood
Sfoam - white - the walls and ceiling
Door - use whatever you have - 1/2" etc
Use drywall screws - cheap and fast

or you can go here for a different design:

A bit of old advice - Do Not Leave Anything in Your Hut that Has Value and you cannot replace.

Good Luck,

bobby

If you want to attach a set of Ski's for towing try any Goodwill/Salvation Army/St Vincent stores.

Bobby beat me to the punch........Do Not leave anything you would mind loosing in the hut.
Times have changed. It used to be that you could setup the hut full of comfort and gear.
But that is now longer the case. Look at past posts on this and every other ice fishing board and
you will see posts reporting breakin's. That is why a portable works. It gives you shelter and a sleigh to
pull your equipment in.

Jack

So true OP.
Best to just leave the Hut unlocked and empty. Someone stranded may need shelter or the thieves will be happy that they can just walk in - rather than kick your door* in.

*Disclaimer:
They may just burn it. Happens all to often.

Best of Luck,
bobby

I have a permanent hut.
While some like portables I like the fact that I can head up to simcoe on friday night, jump on my sled and pull the sleigh out behind it.
Set every thing up, drop a couple line's, fish abit then go to bed.
Wake up at 6am drop a couple lines, then cook breakfast!!!!
Bacon, egg's, coffee, all while still fishing!! ;D
Then open a window so that every one walking by can at least have a good smell of fresh cooked bacon.LOL

Bobbyb gave you excellent advise on how to build it.
As for the size, it's totally up to you and what you need.
My hut is 6x8 and I find it a little small.
The next hut will be 8x10.
More room and in the off season I can put the sled in it to keep it out of the summer elements and out of site.

As was said already,
Do NOT leave ANYTHING in the hut, they will steal even a broken lure if you leave it.
and do NOT lock the door or they will kick it in just to see if you left anything.
