~~~ Dumb Stuff we done or seen on the ice
« on: January 17, 2012, 02:37:09 PM »
~~~I still have a pop up 2 man hut in my garage that I don't use, but one year on Simcoe, the wind was howling and I was trying to get it set up, and just as I lifted the bars to raise the top the wind caught it, and away I went with this large black sail full of air. Couldn't see a thing ahead of me, almost ran over 2 other guys phishen, at least I thunk I missed them. Finally after 10 mins I started to hit some snow patches. So I crouched down, and next snow patch let go of the bars. I stopped 5' from shore. Then had to walk all the way back out where I left my gear

Thats just too funny glad it gave you a work out and you werent hurt.   I remember 4-5 years ago I see this piece of large black plastic covering the ice near to where I was fishing, I was curious and went over and checked it, and to my suprise someone had dropped there drawers there and let a good one.... hey at least they had the decency to cover it up so noone would step in it....

I was out on Simcoe a few years back, heard this grinding noise comin right at me - went out cause it sounded like a plane - and I'm serious it scared the crap out of me -

Low and behold an old Jeep Willis minus the muffler and windows - towing a Johnny on the Spot  .
Where did he set up - about 40 feet away. Left the dam Jeep running while he fiddled with his "Hut" then drilled 4 holes. It sounded like a rock crusher you'd find at a quarry.

Ignorant - yep - after I made a "kind" remark about moving a little bit away from me, he informed me I did not own the lake  . I told him he wasn't too considerate - but have to admit - he was much bigger than me so I did not push it.

Half hour later he started up his rocket ride and pulled away leaving 4 - 10" holes in the shape of a square - unmarked along with a 2 foot - 2 x 4.

What a moron. The jeep had no plates, so prob no insurance. You do get to see a show at least once a year if your out there enough,

i was in my permanent hut one nite crappie fishing late ice.  it had been raining all day so the ice was glare and it was pretty windy. All of the sudden there was a big gust of wind and the rope holding the hut down broke. away i went riding in the hut. i jumped out after about 2 hundred yards and was blown across the the lake the same speed as the hut. luckily one of my rods fell in the hole and jammed up enough to stop  as my keys were inside! i had to walk to shore in my socks as my boots had negative grip.  two other guys in another hut got blown right off the lake and had to stay the night in a strangers cottage.  ever since i use aircrart cable not 99 cent yellow rope. its a bit more "spud friendly"

  This is not a dumb thing, more of a  strange thing, the hut we were in was hit by another.

Many years ago I was invited to go  fishing on Scugog out of Caesarea. The weather was wet and rainy with  a cold front to come through near noon with high winds and dropping  temperatures (much like what we just went through).

When we got there the lake was covered  with water and we picked are way on the high spots out to the hut.  Got all set-up and were catching dinks nothing any good. The weather  man was on the mark that day as the wind picked up around noon and  the temperature started to drop.

The friend I was with spotted something  on the ice moving, sure enough it was an ice hut coming down the  lake. As it got closer we could see it was moving fast enough to  throw up a splash as it went  through the puddles on the ice.

It looked like it would pass to the  north of us, but it caught something on the ice a headed at us. We  had little time to react, we could only watch as it hit us. It hit  pretty hard and stopped against our hut. My friend went out to check  it but just as he got the door open it shifted around and headed  on its way east. We watched till it was a speck.

After that we always had one eye  looking up the lake to see if any other huts were making a run for  it. One more did pass by, it looked more like an outhouse then a hut.  It also continued east to meet up with its buddy.

Ah the fun we have ice fishing.

Got a new one from the weekend. Kanuck and I were out on Simcoe perchin' this weekend. Both of us were on our Iphones using the different apps and I had just finished putting my phone in my pocket when Kanuck made the great cry " I see some big perch in the hole". I bent over quickly and while reaching for the rod I heard the plop of my Iphone hitting the water. I forgot to zip up the pocket in the excitment. After we stared at the phone at the bottom of the lake I thought it's time to tale out the big tackle and I went fishing for the phone. Luckly the phone was in a Otterbox shield and I actually caught it. Long story is the phone was dried with a heater at a distance, put in a bag of rice for 24 hours and charged on the computer and it turned on with no problem Monday night. So watch out for using the phone near the water. See you all this weekend at the tournament.
