Cheapo Windbreak
« on: January 07, 2010, 09:12:59 AM »
Met this fellow yesterday near P Bolster. He was fishin in a Polar 1 man carry on your back portable. The chair in this thing measured 22" - bigger than my recliner.....lol.
No kiddin - a really nice chair!

Off the ice I went and straight down to Markham. My wife says shes gonna certify me.... ;D

I am now the proud owner of this cheapo ($67.) and if I get the season out of it I'll be thrilled. This thingy weighs 11lbs and came with a back pack, 3 windows and a god awful smell of polyester. Threw it on the deck last nite to de-smell it. Good to go today.
Like the guy I met, I'm using a small sleigh today to pull my auger/heat/equip - so in a few minutes I'll be off to give it a whirl.

In short - may not be a bad deal - throw it in the trunk and away you go - whenever.
Future posts on this cheapo - maybe....unless that new car smell comes back :D

Thanks Mike for the Link.

Great to hear they are our sponsors.
Excellent product for a person on the move.  18lbs total and a backpack to carry it - can't beat it!

Just an FYI - If anyone buys one of these units - Open it up and put it on your deck or somewhere where you can air it for a day till you use it. Polyester odor is quite strong - but quickly disapates.

~~~Wondering about height, is there any head room, or are you bent over all the time, and I can you missing a lot of hook sets, if you have no room, to lift your rod,
OP - Polar 1 man Flip Measurements:
Sitting in the chair - There is 33" of width across; 57" of height from ice to top of shelter (lot's of headroom)
To the centre of the augered hole (seated) from the chair - 23" (8" hole). I'm using a 2 foot rod with no problems.
I'm also using a flamless heater.
Safety 1st,
bobby
I have the same problem as Squiggy with those type of chairs...
I bought a different type at CTC ($9.99) that just folds down flat that I use for carp fishing and out on the ice, no arms, and easy to get out of...more like a stool with a bit of a back on it for support...
Got a couple of tarps out in the garage and am thinking I might be able to come up with sumpin' similar..."Gotta thunk on it a bit"
Years ago I built a couple of wind shelters but I listened to my son-in-law (contracter) and used 3/4 inch plywood and they got to be too heavy to pull out on the ice if there was snow even with skis on the bottom... >:(
It did the job OK but was just too heavy...I made two and they are pulling duty as shelvling units out in the garage...
